6 Stylish Hotels to Escape to This Summer – Chosen by Mats Klingberg

Dreaming of a summer escape? These six stylish hotels are high on Mats Klingberg’s travel bucket list—some he’s visited and loved so much he’s eager to return to, others he’s heard wonderful things about and can’t wait to experience. Each one combines beautiful design with a strong sense of place, making them just as perfect for relaxing as they are for exploring.

01.

Pagostas — Patmos, Greece

Tucked away in the historic citadel of Chora on the island of Patmos, this charming guesthouse holds a special connection to our Chiltern Street community: it is run by the husband of our longtime neighbour, Maria Lemos of Mouki Mou. Steeped in history, the building was constructed in 1597 by Parthenios Pagostas and has been thoughtfully restored to preserve its original character. Guests can choose from three uniquely styled rooms, each reflecting the timeless elegance of the island. A secluded garden offers a tranquil retreat, while the rooftop terrace provides sweeping views of the surrounding hills—an ideal spot to unwind and take in the beauty of Patmos.

02.

Forestis — Dolomites, Italy

I haven’t been to Forestis myself yet, but I know several people who have, and they all speak incredibly highly of it. Set high in the Dolomites, it’s known for its calm, pared-back aesthetic—clean lines, natural materials, and expansive views. The suites are surrounded by forest and light, offering a sense of stillness that seems to leave a lasting impression. From what I’ve heard, it’s the kind of place that quietly resets your pace.

03.

Landet Stay — Trosa, Sweden

I know the architect behind Landet Stay and have been eager to visit since it opened. Though I haven’t been myself, it looks beautifully understated and thoughtfully designed. Set in the Swedish countryside on the south of Stockholm, it’s described as a quiet retreat with open skies, wild meadows, and a slow, simple rhythm. The design is minimal yet warm, with natural materials, large windows, and attention to detail throughout. Everyone I know who’s stayed has come back completely relaxed. It’s definitely high on my list.

04.

Macakizi — Bodrum, Turkey

I went last autumn and loved it, so a return trip is definitely on the cards. Set along the Aegean coast, Macakizi is all sea views, stone paths, and long, sun-drenched afternoons that drift into evening. It’s laid-back, warm, and surprisingly hard to leave. I’m already planning my next stay.

05.

Ur Bare — Zarautz, Spain

Just steps from the beach in Zarautz, Ur Bare brings together surf, sea, and thoughtful design. There’s a seasonal infinity pool with views across the bay, a compact gym and sauna for quiet mornings, and rooms designed for slowing down. A place to reset, between the mountains and the ocean.

06.

Vilalara Grand Hotel — Algarve, Portugal

An old-school Algarve icon, recently restored, Vilalara Grand Hotel balances retro charm with a modern wellness focus. Set among lush gardens with saltwater pools and a thalassotherapy spa overlooking the sea, it’s firmly on my list.
